In a Saturday appearance on MSNBC, House Oversight Committee member Rep. Barbara Lawrence (D-IL) sent a strong message to President Donald Trump, letting it be known that when her party assumes control of the chairmanship in the coming days, some long overdue subpoenas are to be expected.
“Donald Trump is inappropriate on so many levels,” Lawrence said. “We will hold him accountable. I sit on Oversight and we have over 51 letters that have been sent to the White House and to different agencies with a deadline of the 11th of January to respond — and one thing that’s so important that everyone needs to know.”
“In these letters, we’re demanding accountability for our government, and these are bipartisan,” she added. “These are letters that the Republicans have written to the White House. It is about who is getting security clearances, it’s talking about how we’re spending our tax dollars, it’s talking about EPA — the Flint water situation.”
“One of the things that we know is that the White House refuses to respond, even to Republicans’ request, when they were in the majority because there was no accountability,” she continued. “The Republicans just sat there. When they asked for information from the White House, documents and data, and they got zero back — there were no subpoenas issued.”
“We are going to use every ounce of responsibility, authority, that we have because we are here to hold accountability of our government for the people who elect us,” she concluded. “And so there will be consequences, subpoenas, and there will be answers.”
This is a far cry from what we’ve seen with Republicans in control of the chairmanship, which has failed to properly investigate any of Trump’s activities up to this point. What a breath of fresh air!
